Sensory Processing Disorder or Sensory Integration Challenges describe a difference in the way that some individual's senses are processed by the brain. This can cause a range of challenges for a student in a classroom/school environment. The bulk of these challenges can appear as difficult behaviours exhibited by a student and will often be handled in a way that is not conducive to student learning and wellbeing. Additionally, these issues can be disruptive to the overall day-to-day management of the classroom.
This course provides an in-depth understanding of this condition, including the symptoms and behaviours associated with it, with a particular focus on how this presents in a classroom/school setting. It is vital that teachers are aware of what SPD and SI is, and to understand the various strategies and tools that can address some of these challenges. This course also provides a foundation for appreciating that prevention is the best strategy for SPD and providing a Positive Learning Environment is best practise for all students.
Sensory processing challenges impact many students and this in turn impacts on classroom management. As teachers, we are actively practicing preventative measures for many different challenges in the classroom, and using prevention for SPD/SI is no different. And the best way to incorporate preventative measures is through understanding.
